There is always broad support lined up ahead of meetings with Donald Trump.

There is always broad support lined up ahead of meetings with Donald Trump.

Much like when a small child needs mom and dad to show up for a match or a tournament, even though deep down one would rather not go at all. Just as predictable as Europe’s Western support ahead of a meeting with Donald Trump are the Russian attacks on Kyiv. It is difficult to argue against the idea that it is at least useful to carry this support with you in your luggage to Washington and the White House.

It functions as an implicit guarantee of continued warfare: a signal that one does not arrive alone, and that one does not arrive empty-handed. At least, that is what one is trying to imply. Look, Putin is attacking; look, I have support. At the same time, the mainstream media insist that Russia actually has a real need for a peace agreement. And in recent days—just as always before a meeting in Washington—sporadic “news” has once again appeared from bloggers sitting in the United Kingdom and Dubai, shouting Slava Ukraini, and claiming that momentum on the battlefield has shifted.

So how should this really be interpreted?Vladimir Putin is bombing Kyiv back to the Stone Age—or at least to a time without electricity—which according to our own media is proof that Putin does not want peace. At the same time, Zelenskyy runs to Washington to continue the war, exactly as Russia is allegedly hoping for. Doesn’t it sound like someone is walking straight into a trap? And how does this actually align with the claim that Russia needs peace? But perhaps it does not really matter. European support for Zelenskyy is broad, regardless of what the outcome in Washington may be.

The most steadfast support comes, paradoxically, from Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Støre. At this point, that support seems to be driven by guilt and shame—not by strategic reason.Europe’s biggest mistake was jumping when the United States, under Joe Biden, said “jump.” Now they are left standing with their hats in their hands. And they cannot exactly back out either. They went all in, to use poker terminology (Texas Hold’em). It is embarrassing. You do not go all in unless you are confident in the outcome of the game you are actually playing.

And perhaps this is precisely the most revealing mistake: Europe’s leaders have treated our future—Europe’s future—and Ukrainian lives as pieces in a game they do not even control. But fine. The game continues. I will not steal any more of your time.I will continue to follow developments, but there is little that feels worth reporting.

Perhaps it is time to start asking some serious and important questions going forward:Why on earth is Ukraine so crucial to us that our politicians are willing to sacrifice everything for a former Soviet state that has not held a democratic election in nearly seven years?
