Former US President Donald Trump is once again talking about drastically slimming the US administrative state.
Trump made the comments Saturday when he addressed a crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, according to Breitbart.
“As we secure the border, another key priority for the next Congress and the next president will be to drain the swamp once and for all to remove rogue bureaucrats and root out the deep state. Congress should pass groundbreaking reform that gives the president the authority to ensure that any federal employee who is corrupt, incompetent, or redundant can be told: "you're fired." Trump's comments come on the heels of new reports claiming Trump plans to fire nearly 50,000 government bureaucrats if he returns to the White House in 2024. Trump apparently confirmed those claims during a speech at Turning Point USA's Student Action Summit last month.
Trump complained that the current process for removing a federal bureaucrat from office is a lengthy process that takes an average of five years:
- Our current appeals process to remove these bureaucrats, people who can be really bad, they can even be thieves. You can catch them stealing large sums of money. You have to go through an appeals process in three stages, which on average takes five years per stage. In 15 years you will be gone; you will be away from the politician's office then, he said.
Trump said the long time frame deters other politicians from starting the process of removing bureaucrats because it takes longer than their terms in office.
