Theresa May criticises children protesting against climate change

Theresa May has slammed the ‘disruption’ caused by children protesting against climate change across the UK today.
Thousands of primary, secondary school and university students walked out of class on Friday morning to challenge the ‘alarming lack of Government leadership’ and to demand the prime minister to declare a climate emergency.
However, following peaceful marches outside Parliament in London, some of the protesters were seen drinking alcohol and climbing on top of traffic lights around Westminster.

May’s spokesperson said: ‘Everybody wants young people to be engaged in the issues that affect them most so that we can build a brighter future for all of us. (Picture: PA) However, a student could be heard speaking over a loudspeaker saying that ‘violence’ was unnecessary, pleading with the crowd to keep the protest peaceful. The girl told the crowd: ‘If we’re angry and promote violence, that’s not going to help us. We need positivity.’ The protest spilled out of Parliament Square and up Parliament Street and to Downing Street. Others climbed into the window arches of buildings on the corner of Parliament Street and Great George Street singing ‘save our planet’. The national protest, called ‘Youth Strike 4 Climate’, is being led by a coalition of campaigners, and has led to many pupils missing lessons. School leaders and education secretary Damian Hinds have warned students they should not miss lessons to take part in the strikes. Mr Hinds said: ‘I want young people to be engaged in key issues affecting them and involving themselves in causes they care about. ‘But let me be clear, missing class won’t do a thing to help the environment; all they will do is create extra work for teachers.’
However, Caroline Lucas said children missing school to campaign for action to tackle climate change should be allowed to do so because of ‘exceptional circumstances’.

The only Green Party MP, said she was ‘feeling quite emotional’ following the ‘incredible turnout’ in Brighton. Sharing pictures of the event on Twitter, she wrote: ‘This is most hopeful thing that’s happened in years. ‘Exciting thing is positive policies like #GreenNewDeal are taking off too. ‘We can win this fight for a safer, fairer future.’
